Zenodo DOI

Zenodo is a service to create citations (as Digital Object Identifiers) for software, data, and other artifacts.

CERN, an OpenAIRE partner and pioneer in open source, open access and open data, provided this capability [Open Data policy/catch-all repository] and Zenodo was launched in May 2013.

Creating a DOI for a github repo

Zenodo can sync with Github.

See https://coderefinery.github.io/github-without-command-line/doi/

Briefly

  1. on zenodo
    1. initiate connection with github
    2. enable the github repo on zenodo
  2. on github
    1. create a release
  3. back on zenodo
    1. resync/refresh github connections page
  4. copy generated DOI to readme, manuscript, etc

Tutorial instructions use sandbox.zenodo.org. When you're comfortable and want the real DOI, remove sandbox from the url.

Github releases can be deleted and recreated to initiate DOI (re)generation on the zenodo side
