Behavioral Indicator of Resiliency to Distress (BIRD) task is a behavioral assessment to assess oneโs ability to continue despite feeling frustrated or distressed. This millisecond webpage (https://www.millisecond.com/library/bird) goes over the background on the task (developed by C.W. Lejuez, Stacey Daughters, et al., 2006), the Task Procedure, What it Measures, Psychological Domains, and Main Performance Metrics.
First level of BIRD (~3minutes) Begins with 5 second latency in between dot presentations and is adjusted based on participant performance as the progress. Correct answers reduce latency by 0.5 seconds; incorrect answers or non-responses increase the latency by 0.5 seconds). An average latency is then calculated to index skill level.
Second level of BIRD A bit more challenging. Beings with the average latency from level 1 for four minutes. Then, halves the latency for the last minute making the task very difficult, indexed as the challenge latency.
Final level of BIRD After a resting periodโฆ the participant will complete the task at challenge latency for up to 5 minutes. Throughout this final level, the participant can choose to quit/escape the game at any time.
The total number of points earned was visible to them. DT was indicated by persistence on the final level, examined as a categorical variable (terminated vs. not terminated). Total score on the first two levels can be used to control for the effects of skill on persistence.
When working with BIRD, what do we want to know? How long did individuals persist on the BIRD task? How many individuals quit the task before the 5 minute period expired? What was the number of correct responses in the first two levels? (skill index) Goal: group low and high distress tolerance based on whether they quit the task or were able to persist for the five minutes.
Behavioral Metrics: Accuracy / Response Rate: % of correct responses per level Latency: Response after stimulus onset.
